Why it Works: Active Substances

Explore the key actives and their benefits for your skin.

Pichia/Resveratrol Ferment Extract: Resveratrol is an effective active ingredient but it has difficulty penetrating through the skin barrier. Pichia Pastoris is a yeast that ferments resveratrol making it more readily available for the skin to absorb. Resveratrol is a polyphenol (micronutrients found in plants), phytoestrogen (plant-based compound that can mildly mimic the effects of estrogen in the body and they can bind to estrogen receptors), and a phytoalexin (antimicrobial compounds produced by plants). This compound is found in grapes, berries, tomatoes and nuts. It exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory properties, reparative/wound healing and regenerative properties such as enhancing collagen synthesis, protecting the skin against the harmful effects of UVB radiation, and inhibiting tyrosinase which aids in reducing skin discoloration.

Bitter Melon Extract: Bitter melon (Momordica charantia) is a nutrient-dense medicinal plant from tropical and subtropical regions, long used in traditional folk medicine. It contains many bioactive components including phenolics and flavonoids which act as strong antioxidants. Proteomic analysis of exosomes derived from bitter melon has revealed significant antioxidant properties, suggesting their potential therapeutic efficacy in alleviating skin conditions associated with oxidative stress. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12514849/ What are exosomes in our bodies? An exosome is a microscopic vesicle (sphere) that originates in a cell and is then exported out of the cell to another cell to deliver a package containing items such as proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, and small molecules. Think of this exosome as a beneficial courier delivering an important biological message — such as wound healing, antioxidant, anti-tumor, and anti-inflammatory effects. This process is constantly happening in our bodies. What kind of exosomes can we use topically on our skin? We can use plant-derived exosomes. These tiny vesicles are extracted from plant cells through an intensive process that includes ultracentrifugation, ultrafiltration, and co-precipitation. Examples of plant-derived exosomes that have been isolated from plant cells include fruits, vegetables, seeds, rhizomes, leaves, flowers, tea, and nuts. How do they penetrate into our skin? These nano-vesicles are small enough — 50 to 500 nanometers — to penetrate into and through the epidermis and reach the skin cells to deliver their beneficial payload. Their membrane is made up of a lipid bilayer that allows for interactions with the lipids of the stratum corneum (top layer of the epidermis), thereby promoting penetration and distribution within the skin. Rich in phenolics and flavonoids with strong antioxidant activity. Nano-vesicles (50–500 nm) penetrate the epidermis via lipid bilayer interaction with the stratum corneum. Delivers a beneficial payload including wound healing, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties directly to skin cells. Plant-derived and extracted through ultracentrifugation, ultrafiltration, and co-precipitation.

Tripeptide-1: signal peptide with the amino sequence of glycine-histidine-lysine, or GHK. GHK is attached to palmitic acid (a fatty acid) to increase oil solubility and skin penetration. Considered a Matrikine signal peptide which originates from the fragmentation of extracellular matrix proteins and regulates cellular activities by interacting with specific receptors. Matrikines are involved in the process of extracellular matrix renewal and cellular proliferation. Supports ECM synthesis, provides wound recovery, wrinkle reduction, skin firming, skin roughness and texture improvement. Stimulates collagen synthesis by activating the transforming growth factor TGF-ß. TGF-β stimulates dermal collagen remodeling, increases collagen production, and increases hyaluronic acid (HA) production. HA is ubiquitous in body tissues and is best known for its capability of attracting water molecules. The highly polar structure of HA makes it capable of binding 10,000 times its own weight in water. HA is used exogenously for the promotion of tissue regeneration and skin repair

Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7: synthetic peptide composed of four amino acids (glycine-glutamine- proline-arginine) and palmitic acid. The addition of the fatty acid palmitic acid enhances the stability and permeability of the ingredient to the skin. skin repair ingredient with anti-inflammatory properties: protects extracellular matrix components from degradation by reducing the production of interleukin-6 (IL IL-6) by keratinocytes and fibroblasts, key cells in the skin. Interleukin-6 is a mediator of inflammation that causes faster degradation of extracellular matrix components, promotes wrinkle formation and reduces skin firmness and elasticity. Acute inflammatory response can lead to glycation damage, or the process by which glucose links with proteins and causes them to bind together, stiffening tissues. This negatively affects the skin's support system, composed of collagen, elastin, and other proteins, and leads to wrinkles, loss of tone and elasticity, and uneven skin tone.

Ganoderma Lucidum (Reishi Mushroom): Acts as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant agent. Also exhibits moderate tyrosinase inhibition when compared to kojic acid. It is an extract of the caps and stalks of mushroom, ganoderma lucidum. It contains ganoderic acids, mannitol and coumarins as active compounds. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties are due to ergosterol, a fungal sterol. Moreover, it shows anti-allergic effect due to the presence of linoleic linoleic-, oleic oleic-, stearic stearic-and palmitic acid by preventing the release of histamine.

Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (Vitamin C): acts as an effective antioxidant in which it delays or protects against cellular damage caused by reactive oxygen species and free radicals. Water soluble Vitamin C derivative with superior stability in formulations compared to L-ascorbic acid (Vitamin C). Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate is a salt that converts to ascorbic acid when applied to the skin and is gentler and more stable on the skin compared to L-ascorbic acid. Acts on the melanin formation process to prevent hyperpigmentation and senile keratosis. Exhibits anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial benefits. Works synergistically with Tocopheryl Acetate(Vitamin E).
